DesiTude – Wear the spirit 1947
Founded in 2016, DesiTude is a swadeshi brand which offers handcrafted jeans and other premium quality apparel and accessories made out of hand-spun hand-woven Khadi. We are attempting to present Khadi in renewed avatars reflecting modern appeal, like Khadi denim, while keeping intact the spirit and purity of Khadi.
Planting a tree for every sale: Our humble way to give back to Mother Earth
The simplest of all solutions to combat global warming lies in planting more and more trees. For partaking in an industry that pollutes so much, we owe reparations to Mother Earth. We, therefore, plant a tree for every sale. The DesiTude cycle that begins by extracting fibres from trees ends in planting new ones.
10% of each sale proceeds goes towards social causes
As a brand, we consciously and continuously wish to conserve the environment and care for the people around us. We have pledged that for every purchase you make from DesiTude, 10% of the sale value shall go for social causes. Till now this money has been utilized in buying and distributing sanitary napkins to underprivileged women with the help of CodeRed, a student-centric initiative working in the field of menstrual hygiene.
An eco-friendly label, quite literally
Denims usually have leather labels on them. Brands consider that as an embellishment. We have consciously avoided those leather patches because of the harmful effect on the environment. Our labels are made of Khadi, with DesiTude’s logo hand printed onto them using the traditional Indian block printing method.
Think Global. Act Local. Buy Indian.
At DesiTude, we believe in the concept of swadeshi. All our raw materials are sourced from within India. Our products are proudly handcrafted and brought to life in the historic Indian city of Mumbai. DesiTude merchandise reaches your doorsteps through India Post, a swadeshi, government-owned postal service company founded way back in 1774.
An antithesis to fast fashion
The fashion industry is a major contributor to global warming and climate change. From fibres, fabrics, textile, clothing construction, process waste, shipping and retail, the entire cycle leaves behind a huge carbon footprint. This lengthy process is undertaken to cater just one season; for the next season the entire process is repeated. What remains unsold in one season is carried forward to the next under discounted sale, and what still remains is thrown away. It is indeed ruthless. Our Khadi products, because they are handmade without many resources as compared to mill made fabrics, are inherently eco-friendly, and the carbon footprint they leave behind is miniscule. At DesiTude, we believe in meaningful fashion. We make our garments only on order and as per your requirements. This makes our fashion timeless.
Machines manufacture, humans createMindful clothing handcrafted with love
Plucking of cotton bolls from the plant, converting it into threads by hand spinning on a charkha, weaving the hand-spun yarn using looms that do not run on electricity but by hand, dyeing them, the human element that goes behind making Khadi is incomparable. At DesiTude, the human element behind making of the fabric is extended to the garments as well. Each of DesiTude’s garments is cut and sewn by experienced tailors, customised with a personal touch, and not bulk-made on automated machines.
Khadi: a symbol of India’s textile heritage
From the Indus valley civilization leading up to the modern day, Khadi has come a long way. Not only did it flourish within India and inherit royal patronage, it also awed foreign travellers compelling them to take it to their lands for trade. With fashion and styles changing once every 4 or 5 months, will a fabric that takes so much of handiwork and time to take shape sustain?
